hands free

sea calm hot sun cool breeze
empty late September beach morning

a rare day hands free no weight
no tending to any someones need

the space between us quiet and without
blame separate/together mom and i

comb the sandy trail of treasures
left by the mornings receding tide

she searching bounty in perfection
me searching beauty in the broken

we breathing in deep of the deep
hands free to seek what we need

  1. Michelle - There is so much to ponder in these sparse words. I love the two perspectives, and how they are woven together - not just syntactically but philosophically or experientially. Two lives, forever entangled. Sometimes, I think relationships of this magnitude - mother and daughter - are expressed much better in poetry than prose, though both work. This is beautiful.

    1. Thank you, Charity, for pondering here. It can be so simple and so complicated at the same time, yes?
